Hair strands have pores. In order to lighten the hair, a bleach or developer is used to open the pores so the existing color leaks out, leaving the hair’s overall appearance lighter. In order to darken the hair, developer again must be used, but also in combination with color. As a result, when the new color applied it will not just coat the hair but soak into the opened pores of the hair strands themselves.
Problems arise when hair is left to bleach/develop too long or maybe too strong of a developer was used. This can result in hair becoming distressed, where hair pores are stuck in the open position. Though there are treatments for distressed hair (methods as crude as applying a coating to the outside of the hair or as intense as a slow replenishing of the hair’s proteins, ceramides and essential oils), it is better to have never destroyed the hair in the first place.
